There comes a day in the life of every building when the spotlight shifts from spectacular above-ground structures to the largely hidden yet decisive works taking place out of sight. Parkside Residence has just entered this very phase: after the site was levelled and the earthworks completed, the deep-foundation stage has begun, the stage that will, in fact, serve as the backbone of the entire project.
Over the coming weeks the construction team will install 1,020 bored piles, each 12–14 metres long. At first glance this might seem like mere statistics, yet it speaks volumes about the care with which the designers and geotechnical engineers have planned the building’s future. Every single pile has been sized and positioned according to its own soil-survey data so that the whole structure will rest on the most stable possible foundations.
As soon as piling is finished in a given section, work immediately begins on the blinding concrete beneath the basement slab. This crucial layer guarantees the exact positioning of the foundation slab—an indispensable “scaffolding” for the future reinforced concrete. These surfaces are promisingly preparing the ground for the next operations.
Meanwhile, the pile caps are steadily taking shape. These reinforced-concrete “cap blocks,” which tie the pile heads together, ensure that the loads from the foundation slab are evenly transferred to the piles deep below. The contractors are using special vibration- and noise-dampened technology to disturb neighbouring buildings and residents as little as possible.
This may be a less eye-catching stage of construction, but it is precisely what will make Parkside Residence truly enduring. When we visit the site in the coming months, we will see a completely different picture: the reinforced-concrete basement structure will be under way and the forms will gradually rise vertical.
